Why Boca Raton Retirees with $2M+ Should Reevaluate Roth Conversions and DIY Wealth Management

Fee-Only in Boca Raton

I was recently featured in a national financial publication, and I’m excited to share it with you, especially because the reader who submitted the question lives right here in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, just like me.

This reader asked whether paying a 1% Asset Under Management (AUM) fee to a financial adviser was truly necessary. He explained that he had managed his portfolio his entire life, owned rental property, received Social Security, had a solid retirement plan, and was entering his 70s feeling like things had gone well so far. However, he wondered if the time had finally come to work with a financial planner, preferably without a massive price tag.

Below, I’ve broken down the key questions raised in the article questions we hear every day from clients in very similar situations.

1. Should retirees in their 70s who have managed their own money finally hire a financial adviser?

If you’ve been a successful DIY investor your whole life, you’re probably not ready, or even willing, to hand over control of your portfolio. And you don’t have to.

Working with an hourly, Fee-Only CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® allows you to gain expert insight without surrendering management or paying an ongoing 1% fee. Here is where an adviser can add tremendous value:

  • Unbiased Portfolio Validation: A specialist can review your investments to ensure you aren’t exposed to hidden single-stock concentration risks, expensive fund fees, or unintended overlaps (such as holding different ETFs or mutual funds that own the exact same underlying assets). At our firm, Advise Financial, we invest thousands of dollars monthly in advanced institutional analytics software tools not typically available to retail investors, giving us a unique lens through which to evaluate your portfolio.
  • Protecting the Surviving Spouse: In many couples, one partner leads investment management and is accustomed to market fluctuations. When market downturns hit, staying the course requires discipline. But the real vulnerability arises when the primary investor passes away, leaving the surviving spouse to manage a complex portfolio alone. Without a relationship with a trusted hourly adviser, a grieving spouse may fall into the hands of a high-pressure salesperson pushing expensive annuities or commission-based products that run counter to what you worked so hard to build.

2. Is paying a 1% AUM fee worth it if I already enjoy researching and managing my own stocks?

If you’re doing a solid job using low-cost, highly diversified index funds and you aren’t day trading, but instead adopting Warren Buffett’s long-term buy-and-hold philosophy, paying a 1% annual fee purely for portfolio management may not add much value. That’s especially true if you’ve proven you can stay calm and rational during major market corrections.

However, even high-performing DIY investors often miss one critical piece: having a structured “recipe” for their portfolio.

When we ask self-directed investors how they split their portfolio between U.S. and international equities, or among large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks, many realize they don’t have a clear target ratio. Instead, they’ve built their holdings organically over time.

Engaging an hourly CFP® helps you optimize that asset allocation recipe and establish a disciplined rebalancing routine without tying your advisory fees to your growing portfolio balance year after year.

3. What type of low-cost, local financial adviser should I look for in Boca Raton or Palm Beach County?

Regardless of who you choose, you’ll get the absolute best value by sticking to two strict criteria:

  • Look for Hourly or Retainer Fee Models: Flat fees decouple your advisory costs from your wealth growth. On a $2 million portfolio, a 1% AUM fee costs you $20,000 per year. If your portfolio grows to $4 million, that same 1% fee jumps to $40,000 per year. By contrast, an adviser charging an annual retainer of, say, $6,000 ($500/month) might adjust slightly over time for inflation, but your fee will stay nowhere near $40,000 when your wealth doubles.
  • Always Insist on a Fee-Only Fiduciary: Do not assume that an hourly adviser is automatically Fee-Only. Some advisers charge hourly rates while simultaneously selling financial or insurance products that pay them handsome backend commissions. Working exclusively with a Fee-Only CFP® guarantees that your adviser is compensated solely by you, eliminating sales incentives and hidden conflicts of interest.

4. How can a financial adviser add real value to a multi-million-dollar portfolio if you are DIY?

Most self-directed investors rarely let a third party review their holdings. They spend decades building wealth using strategies they’ve researched themselves, often very successfully with index funds or low-cost ETFs.

Eventually, though, a pivotal question arises: Is it worth paying an hourly, Fee-Only CFP® for an objective, conflict-free review of your wealth plan?

The answer is almost always yes. A comprehensive review by a CFP® can help you:

  • Fine-tune your overall asset allocation across domestic, international, equity, and fixed-income assets.
  • Uncover hidden expense ratios and eliminate portfolio overlap.
  • Align your investment risk directly with your retirement income goals and tax horizon.

5. Is a Roth conversion worth considering in your 70s if you already have rental income, Social Security, and an annuity?

By age 70, many diligent savers have accumulated significant wealth in tax-deferred accounts such as Traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, SEPs, or TSPs.

This means the IRS is effectively a major partner in your retirement. Starting at age 73 (or 75, depending on your birth year), Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) force you to withdraw funds, pushing that income directly onto your tax return.

With roughly three years before RMDs kick in, working with a CFP® to evaluate a strategic Roth Conversion plan can be game-changing. However, these conversions involve several moving parts that must be managed simultaneously:

  • IRMAA Surcharges: Converting too quickly can trigger higher Medicare Part B and Part D premiums.
  • Tax Bracket Bumping: Income from rental properties, pensions, or annuities narrows the remaining space in your current tax bracket.
  • Social Security Taxation: Higher taxable income can increase the percentage of your Social Security subject to federal income tax.
  • Strategic Asset Location: Because Roth IRAs grow tax-free for life and aren’t subject to lifetime RMDs, they often warrant a distinct, longer-term asset allocation compared to your taxable or tax-deferred accounts.

Running these multi-scenario stress tests is where an hourly or retainer-based CFP® delivers massive value, especially at a firm like Advise Financial, where specialized tax and retirement income planning is our core focus.
