FFee-Only Financial Advisor Boca Raton vs Fee-Based

Why This Difference Defines Your Retirement

Choosing a Fee-Only Financial Advisor in Boca Raton or anywhere in South Florida can be overwhelming. Although there are thousands upon thousands of professionals in the area, the reality is that less than 6% of the financial advisors in Boca Raton and Palm Beach who are Certified Financial Planners (CFP®) are also Fee-Only advisors.

If we ask Gemini which is better, a Fee-Only or a Fee-Based advisor, we see that its verdict is: “For most people, Fee-Only is considered the ‘gold standard.’ It removes the ‘used-car salesman’ element from financial planning. You pay for their brain, not their ability to sell you a specific brand of investment.”

The Reality of Finding a Fee-Only Planner in South Florida

The big reality is that practically 100% of CFPs are Fee-Based advisors, which is why finding a good Fee-Only planner has become quite a challenge.

For example, in Palm Beach, which is considered “Wall Street South,” there are approximately 1,500 CFPs, but we could estimate that only about 60 are Fee-Only.

If we look at this same number for Boca Raton, which is also considered the Financial Planning capital of the country due to its high concentration of CFP® professionals, we see that of the nearly 500 CFPs in Boca Raton, less than 25 are Fee-Only. And if you are also looking for those among the 25 who provide hourly services or one-time consultations, the number is even lower.

Understanding Fee-Only vs. Fee Based Definitions

That is why in this blog, we are going to talk about the benefits of a Fee-Only advisor versus a Fee-Based one. As you will see, the industry makes these two words sound very similar, but their definitions are fundamentally different. We will present the reasons why more and more clients decide to seek a Fee-Only advisor, especially now that clients have more knowledge using ChatGPT or Gemini for their financial questions.

This is particularly relevant when managing RMDs or Roth Conversions, where you might simply want a second opinion or an expert consultation without conflicts of interest to know if these strategies can help you optimize your retirement.

What is a Fee-Based Advisor? (The Industry Standard)

As mentioned, most advisors in our area and across the country are “Fee-Based” (meaning they receive commissions for sales of financial or insurance products). Although the name sounds professional, it allows for significant conflicts of interest that many clients do not notice until it is too late.

The Structure:

These advisors can charge you a management fee AND ALSO collect commissions for the products they recommend to you, such as annuities, life insurance, or mutual funds with surcharges.

The Conflict:

This “double charging” can incentivize the advisor to recommend products that pay a high commission to the advisor, even if a lower-cost alternative exists for you.

The “Suitability” Standard:

Many Fee-Based advisors only follow a suitability standard. This means they only have to prove that a product is “suitable” for you, not necessarily the best or most economical.

I think you can already begin to understand why most financial advisors are Fee-Based, given that by selling you these products, they, their firms, or their investment banks receive high commissions. To give you an idea, in 2025, the largest investment banks on the planet had their second-best year in history, reaching about $100 billion (according to disruptionbanking.com).

We are not saying that all those commissions came from product sales or trading; we want to show that the number is significant.

The Fee-Only Fiduciary Alternative: Our 100% Commitment

At Advise Financial, we chose a different path. As a Fee-Only Fiduciary firm, we are compensated exclusively by our clients. We do not accept commissions, rebates, or any payments from third parties. To put it simply, we do not even receive a gift card from any financial or insurance group for the sale of financial products.

Pure Fiduciary Duty:

We are legally and ethically obligated to put your interests above our own at all times. If a lower-cost fund meets your objective, you can have the peace of mind that it will be the one we recommend.

Why would a financial advisor or planner want to be Fee-Only if, by being Fee-Based, they would earn much more money?

This is a question that we at Advise Financial receive very often. To answer this question, I always like to say that before founding Advise Financial, I was also an advisor who worked in a financial group that promoted the Fee-Based scheme.

I realized that clients have more information every day. In the past, it was very complex or would have taken them a long time to know how much their financial advisor was charging them.

But before the arrival of AI Chats, it was already clear that in this decade, the only secret is that there is no longer a secret, and clients can know how much they are being charged and validate if the payment they make is aligned with the value they receive.

What I mean by this is that now the client understands and looks for that planner who actually adds value to the client and not mainly to the financial group where they work.

That is where the Fee-Only scheme has, and will have, the certainty of being the winning modality, for its transparency and for truly looking after the fiduciary criterion of putting the client’s interest over the advisor’s.

A Specialized Group:

Of the hundreds of firms in Palm Beach, at Advise Financial, we belong to the elite group of Fee-Only specialists who refuse to sell products for their own benefit. Our only “product” is expert and impartial advice.

How do we compare?

Two ways to work with us: Hourly or Asset Management

We believe that expert fiduciary advice must be flexible. Because we are Fee-Only, you can choose the service model that best fits your financial stage:

  • Hourly Financial Planning: Ideal for those who manage their own investments but need a professional “second opinion” or a specific strategy for RMDs, Roth Conversions, or Tax Planning. You pay only for the expert time you need, without requiring asset minimums.
  • Asset Management (Wealth Management): For clients who prefer to delegate the daily management of their portfolio. We charge a transparent percentage based on assets under management (AUM), ensuring that our interests are perfectly aligned with the growth of your wealth. But since our goal is to add value to our clients, within this service modality, you will also receive tax planning and financial planning, performed in an ongoing way, where each season we will proactively review your personal finances, your goals, your taxes, your cash flow, and your estate planning.

Why this matters for RMD and Roth Strategies

When planning Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) or Roth Conversions, strategies based on mathematics are needed, not a sales pitch.

A Fee-Based advisor might suggest a complex annuity to “solve” your RMD problem because that pays them a large commission upfront. As Fee-Only Fiduciaries and experts in Roth Conversions at Advise Financial, we analyze your tax brackets and market volatility to give you a strategy designed to save you money, not to generate a commission for us.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Is my current advisor Fee-Only? The majority of advisors in Florida are Fee-Based. If your advisor sells insurance, annuities, or mutual funds with surcharges, they are not Fee-Only. Ask them: “Do you or your firm receive commissions from third parties?” At Advise Financial, the answer is always No.
  • Why are there so few Fee-Only fiduciaries? It is estimated that less than 5% of advisors in Boca Raton are strictly Fee-Only. Most firms prefer the Fee-Based model because it allows them to charge both fees and commissions. Staying Fee-Only requires a much higher ethical commitment to transparency.
  • Do I have to move all my assets to work with you? Not at all. Unlike most firms in Palm Beach, at Advise Financial we offer Hourly Planning. You can keep your assets where they are and simply pay for our fiduciary experience to solve specific tax or retirement problems.
